PhotoPlus Expo 2001 Photo Coverage

PhotoPlus Expo
Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York, NY
November 1 - 3, 2001

This was a hard to define show. Was it for the public, for professionals or the industry - maybe all three? It seems that any show in New York gets New Yorkers and this was no exception. Only about 1/2 of the upper floor of the exhibit area was filled with booths. However, the show was well attended and the exhibitors an excellent sample of the industry.

Our biases are to the digital and this certainly dominated the show. In only a few places would one get a sense that film is still alive. Even struggling Polaroid had a booth. Clearly the major draws were the large camera companies with Canon and Nikon in the lead. Canon only recently announced the EOS - 1D and has since lowered the price to $5,500 even before it ships. Nikon was showing off its new CoolPix 5000 consumer camera. Yet, in the professional digital SLR section the booth was also packed as the attendees fondled and asked questions about the Nikon D1X and D1H.

Excitement is in the air in photography like it has not been for years. Digital is changing everything. PhotoPlus Expo was a good sample of the winds of change.
